The Peñín Guide Gives 14 Albet i Noya Wines over 90 Points

The results of the 2017 Peñín Guide were published recently, and our wines got an exceptional score this year, with 14 wines scoring from 90 to 93 points

Specifically, three of these wines got a score of 93 points, the highest of all of the wines ranked—one more wine than last time. There were two red wines, Belat and La Milana, and the sparkling wines Clàssic Penedès, Brut 21 Barrica, which were given this score by the wine tasters from the Peñín Guide.  

Next, with 92 points, are El Blanc XXV and two red wines, Reserva Martí and Ocell de Foc. They are followed by 100% Xarel·lo and El Fanio, with 91 points, and lastly, with 90 points, seven more items, including white, red, sweet, and sparkling wines: 3 Macabeus, Chardonnay Col·lecció, Lignum white Syrah Col·lecció, Dolç Adrià, Brut Nature Reserva 3, and Brut 21.  

These scores make us the vineyard with the greatest number of wines ranked of all the wines from the Penedès denomination of origin, and the second-highest-ranking vineyard of all Catalonia, after Castillo de Perelada, which had 17 wines scoring over 90 points within one denomination of origin.  

It must be kept in mind that the Peñín Guide is the most prestigious guide to wines from Catalonia and Spain, with editions in German, English, and Japanese, making it an indispensable point of reference both nationally and internationally. It is used by sommeliers, wine lovers, journalists, importers, etc. from all over the world to choose the wines to be included on their wine lists.

Our white wine Xarel·lo Curiós, listed in Forbes magazine as one of the 20 best white wines for under 20 dollars

“Delightfully lively and fresh, while not tongue-curlingly dry. A charming aperitif/ party wine.” This is how the American magazine Forbes describes our Xarel·lo in wine critic Nick Passmore’s article listing the 20 best white wines for under 20 dollars. 
The wine appears on the list with the picture and label exported to the United States, but also with the quality and the characteristics that Xarel·lo has always had. 

Xarel·lo Curiós is the only Catalan and Spanish wine that the wine critic mentions, placing it at the same level as renowned, iconic varieties such as Alsatian Riesling, French Chardonnay, or Italian Pinot Grigio. This is wonderful recognition for the banner variety of the Penedès, confirming the great quality and personality that Xarel·lo gives to white wines. 

Ours is a young Xarel·lo chosen and picked by hand, like the rest of the varieties that we work with, grown in the young vineyards located on the Can Vendrell de la Codina estate. This seasonal wine will be at its fruitiest, with the best aroma, for the first two years after bottling, and it is an excellent match for light, mild dishes.

The Ordal Peach plays a starring role again at Albet i Noya in June and July

This Saturday, June 11th will kick off the 11th Ordal Peach Market in Sant Pau d’Ordal, where peaches take on a starring role, when the town welcomes a multitude of visitors from all over Catalonia every weekend during June, July, and August. 
The market is open in the morning from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and besides buying peaches from local producers, visitors can also participate in activities, workshops, pairings... all linked to this product and region. 

In this context, this year at the vineyard, we are offering the 4th Ordal Peach Market Route. It’s an activity that brings together local cuisine, peaches, and our wines, in order to offer the opportunity to enjoy the best of the region through all of your senses. The experience starts at the vineyard itself, at the Can Vendrell de la Codina estate, where you will find out about our philosophy and history, as well as our wines, and you will take a guided tour through our facilities. Then the activity moves on to Sant Pau d’Ordal in order to set off on a gastronomic itinerary that will take us to three of the village’s restaurants (Cal Pere del Maset, Cal Saldoni and Cal Xim) to enjoy a novel tapa made by each of the restaurant chefs, where peaches will play a starring role, accompanied by our wines.

An Outstanding Vinum Nature Fair, with 21 Medals in the Golden Leaf Awards

The Classic Penedès Brut 21 stands out, winning the award in the highest-ranking category, the Golden Leaf Superior  

The show will bring together over a hundred organic vineyards from all over Spain at Barcelona’s Maritime Museum 

On 20th June, the 6th Vinum Nature Fair will take place in Barcelona, a prestigious fair bringing together the best organic wines in Spain. Within the framework of the fair, the Golden Leaf Awards, which recognise excellence among all of the wines present in the show, will also be announced.  

This year, our wines have won a total of 21 medals in the contest. Of all of them, the Classic Penedès Brut 21 stands out, the winner of the GOLDEN LEAF SUPERIOR. The Chardonnay and Parellada sparkling wine, which just won an award for the best sparkling wine of the DO Penedès a few days ago, shares this highly valued category with only twelve other wines in all of Spain.  

In the GOLDEN LEAF category, the white wines El Fanio, Marian Rion and Lignum were recognised. The red wines Ocell de Foc and Reserva Martí also won medals in this category, as did the Classic Penedès Brut Reserva.  

In the SILVER LEAF section, 12 of our wines were recognised. The white wines 3 Macabeus, Xarel·lo and Blanc XXV; the Pinot Noir rosé, and the red wines Belat, Ull de Llebre, La Milana and Syrah Col·lecció. Silver medals also went to Dolç Adrià and the sparkling wines Classic Penedès Brut Naure Reserve3 and Pinot Noir Brut Rosat.  

Finally, Brut Barrica 21 Reserva 5 and the sparkling wine ancestral NOSODOS+ won the contest’s bronze medal. It should be mentioned that with 21 medals, we are the vineyard with the largest number of wines winning Golden Leaf Awards.  

The Vinum Nature Fir is being held this year for the sixth time, and will take place at Barcelona’s Maritime Museum. With over 100 vineyards from all over Spain, Vinum Nature seeks to be a point of reference in Southern Europe for wines that are organic, natural, and sustainable. Parallel to the fair, there is also a full program of tastings and activities aimed at wine professionals.

Our wines receive two gold medals and three certificates of excellence in the 50th contest of quality wines from DO Penedès

Our BRUT 21 2014 wins the gold medal as the best Classic Penedès and our CURIÒS Ull de Llebre starts out as the best young red wine.  

This is the 50th year that the awards of the Sant Humbert Academy of Wine-tasters have been given, making the competition one of the oldest in Europe. 

Wednesday night, the DO Penedès held an award ceremony in Barcelona for the best wines from the region. Our wines showed their high quality once again by winning a total of two gold medals and three certificates of excellence. In fact, with these 5 awards, we were present as finalists in almost every category in the contest. 

Of all of them, the sparkling wine Brut 21 stands out, winning a gold medal in the Classic Penedès category. The excellent chardonnay and parellada bubbles that already won the gold medal last year are back at the top again this year.  

In the category of young red wines, the gold medal went to Albet i Noya Curiós Ull de Llebre. It’s a young wine, with an incredible fruity taste and without wood, which came this year with a new image, winning the hearts of the members of the Academy.  

The other awards went to the Syrah 2012 Collection, in the category of vintage red wines; the Curiosa 2015 Pinot Noir/Merlot for rosés, and the Xarel·lo Curiós 2015, which won an award in the special section Xarel·los of the Penedès. The vineyard’s oenologist, Marga Torres, accepted the various awards at a dinner that took place in the Born Market in Barcelona. 

The DO Penedès awards were given to wines from the DO in various categories: young whites, vintage whites, young reds, vintage reds, rosés, classics, and xarel·lo. In each category, 5 awards were given: gold, silver, and bronze medals and two certificates of excellence. The contest was organised by the Sant Humbert Academy of Wine-tasters of Vilafranca del Penedès and it is one of the oldest such contests in Europe.

Two of our wines have been awarded two gold medals in the Oenoforum international competition in the Czech Republic

Two of our red wines, Ocell de Foc-Les Timbes 2013 and La Milana 2012, have just placed among the 50 best wines in the Czech Republic, winning gold medals in the category of blended red wines in the Oenoforum international competition, an award given by the Czech Association of wine producers and sommeliers.  
It is the first year that the wines have been entered in this contest, with the intention of reinforcing the presence of the label and the wines in the Czech Republic, where some of our wines are already represented by a wine importer and distributor.  

From 23rd to 25th May, the wines La Milana 2012 and Ocell de Foc-Les Timbes- 2013 can be tasted in Prague in this selection of the 50 best wines in the Czech Republic.  

La Milana and Ocell de Foc represent two of the vineyard’s choices in working with Catalan and French grape varieties 58 years ago, such as Marselan, (Garnatxa Negra and Cabernet Sauvignon) , Caladoc (Garnatxa Negra and Malbec) and also Arinarnoa (Cabernet Franc and Tannat) . In fact, Ocell de Foc, whose name will be changed in the coming new season to Les Timbes, (in honour of the land that it comes from), is a blend of these three varieties that seeks the excellence and complexity provided by Garnatxa, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. On the other hand, La Milana is a traditional blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Ull de Llebre and Merlot that has ended up been fine-tuned with Caladoc, which provides sweet, gentle tannins.

Four of our wines awarded with gold medals by the French guide Gilbert & Gaillard

Coinciding with the Alimentaria Fair, the prestigious French wine guide, Gilbert & Gaillard, has given its awards for the best wines in Catalonia.  

On this occasion, our cellar has been acknowledged with 4 gold medals and 1 silver medal. Specifically, the white wines El Fanio 2014 (100% Xarel·lo aged in cement eggs and acacia barrels) and the experimental El Blanc XXV 2013 (Marina Rión, Vidal and Viognier) have received the highest praise. As for the red wines, La Milana 2012 (Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, Merlot and Caladoc) and Reserva Martí 2009 (Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah) have also been given a gold medal, while the single-variety Syrah Col·lecció 2012 has been awarded with a silver medal. 
We would highlight that both El Fanio 2014 and Reserva Martí 2009 have been acknowledged with over 90 points.  

The Gilbert & Gaillard magazine, the second most important in the world specialising in the world of wine, has written a large article about Catalonia after having spent last February travelling through the country’s 12 designation of origin regions. In total, they visited 114 cellars and tasted over 330 wines and sparkling wines.

Discover the Origin: a new gastronomic experience

Combining the best wines with the best gastronomy to offer a first-rate wine tourism experience. This is what we have set out to do along with the Cal Pere del Maset restaurant, both located in the heart of Sant Pau d'Ordal in Subirats. 

Discover the Origin (http://albetinoya.cat/eng/visites.php) offers the visitor a tour through the different areas in the cellar with tasting right in the place where the wines come from. The barrel room, the old cava and the cement egg area are just some of places that hide the stories and emblematic wines created by Josep Maria Albet i Noya. A very special tasting session that culminates with a sampling menu meal in the Cal Pere del Maset restaurant (http://www.calperedelmaset.com/eng/restaurant.php) where you can continue getting to know and tasting our wines paired with creations by the young chef, Pere Massana. Among the dishes chosen by the chef, there will be the traditional mushroom and foie stuffed artichokes, which will be accompanied with Lignum Blanco, or Kid in Rosemary with potatoes Parmentier, paired with Ocell de Foc red wine, among others.  
This new experience is available from Tuesday to Sunday and the price is 65 Euros. It includes the visit, the meal at Cal Pere del Maset and tasting 8 of the cellar’s premium wines.

Renewing the image of the “Clàssics” range in praise of curiosity

  • The new Xarel·lo, Pinot Noir and Tempranillo vintages are presented with a fresher, younger and more casual label 
  • The three wines are now called ‘Curiosos’, recovering the spirit that led the cellar to adventure into ecological agriculture nearly 40 years ago 
  • The new design is the work of the Barcelona agency La Vildi in collaboration with the illustrator Enrique Fernandez 
The 2015 vintage has brought new airs to the cellar. New airs that arrive with the presentation of a renewed, modern and much fresher image for the trio of wines in the ‘Clàssic’ range, which are now called ‘Curiosos’.

This concept change is one of the cellar’s firmest bets for 2016 and responds to a clear goal: to give the wines a more pleasant and casual style, completely different from the one they had to date, to reach a younger and more urban public that shares the values presented in the new label. 

A change in identity that does not mean a change in quality as the ‘Curiosos’ wines are the same ones as before, expressive and with the personality that has characterised and defined them from the outset. So, from now on Xarel·lo Clàssic is Xarel·lo ‘Curiós’; Pinot Noir Clàssic is Pinot Noir ‘Curiosa’, and Tempranillo Clàssic is Tempranillo ‘Curiós’. 


More than just a simple change of name and label, we aim to reaffirm the character that identifies the cellar: a curious and adventurous character that led us into the unknown world of ecological wines at the end of the 70’s and that has led to innovation and experimentation throughout the last 35 years. 

Albet i Noya’s curiosity for the vineyard and wine is also the curiosity felt by new consumers for an ecological, local and quality product. An interaction that we want to capture in the label so that when the wine is being served, the curios characters’ glasses (and the real ones) are emptied. 

The Barcelona agency La Vildi, along with the Albet i Noya brothers and the cellar’s director of marketing, were responsible for elaborating this new image. Together they analysed and developed a list of adjectives that represented the Albet i Noya brand, until they reached the conclusion that “curiosity” is one of the fundamental pillars that has defined, and still defines, the way the Albet i Noya brothers and the Subirats cellar think. The illustrator Enrique Fernandez was the person who shaped the idea with his design of the caricatures that appear on the bottles. 

Xarel·lo Curiós 2015, Pinot Noir Curiosa 2015 and Tempranillo Curiós 2014 can now be found in shops and restaurants. It probably won’t be until May that the Tempranillo vintage will be added to complete the Albet I Noya cellar’s youngest, freshest and most adventurous trilogy.

Deluge of Gold medals at the Mundus Vini Biofach 2016 international competition

A good start to the year for our wines! Once again they have been acknowledged with medals at international competitions, after the Gold medal awarded to Reserva Martí red wine in the French competition, Millésime Bio 2016, held a couple of weeks ago in Montpellier. 

This time it has been at the German ecological wine competition, Mundus Vini Biofach 2016, where several of our wines have been awarded with Gold medals. Specifically, the four wines that the cellar presented at the competition have been awarded: Reserva Martí and Ocell de Foc red wines, Blanc XXV white wine and also the sparkling Clàssic Penedès, Brut Barrica 21

In the seventh edition of this competition, wines from 15 different countries have been tasted by a jury made up of 50 viticulture sector experts. In total, 209 wines have been awarded, of which 11 with a Great Gold, 108 with a Gold medal and 90 with a Silver medal. 

If we compare the results achieved by the cellar in this edition with the one from last year, Ocell de Foc is the wine that repeats the award and, therefore, it has achieved a Gold medal in two consecutive years. The awards are new for El Blanc XXV white wine and for Clàssic Penedès Brut Barrica 21, as they had taken part in previous editions but without having been awarded any medals. 

These results confirm Sant Pau d’Ordal cellar as the only Catalan cellar, and from the rest of the Spain, to achieve four Gold medals in this competition, a difficult target to reach bearing in mind the number of cellars that decide to present their references in the competition. 

So, overjoyed about all these acknowledgements!

Reserva Martí 2009 and La Milana 2012, awarded in the Millésime Bio 2016 international competition

Once again we have taken part in Millésime Bio, the international ecological wine competition, which is now in its ninth edition, obtaining medals for two of our benchmark red wines: Reserva Martí and La Milana. 

On the 25th, 26th and 27th of January the fair with the same name as the competition, Millésime Bio, will be held in Montpellier, and this will be when the award giving ceremony takes place for the winning wines in this edition and where we will also be present to exhibit the awarded wines and others that complete our range of ecological wines. 

In this edition, 1392 wines were tasted from different wine regions around the world (142 more references than in the previous edition), of which 136 were acknowledged with a gold medal, 172 with a silver medal and 111 with a bronze medal. 

Regarding our wines, the Gold medal achieved by Reserva Martí 2009 places it as one of the two Catalan wines that were awarded with distinctions among all the wines awarded in this category. With a coupage of the Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon varieties and aged for 2 years in French, Allier oak barrels, it is one of the cellars emblematic wines as it was also the first ecological wine that the oenologist and our cellar’s technical director, Josep Maria Albet i Noya, decided to produce as a coupage. 

The other awarded wine in the competition was La Milana 2012, with a Silver medal. This is another of the cellar’s benchmark wines, produced with a coupage of more traditional varieties like Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon, along with a touch of Merlot and Caladoc (a cross between the Garnacha and Malbec varieties) that is aged for 18 months in French, Allier oak barrels. La Milana shows the character of the old vineyards that are the mainstay of the Can Milà de la Roca estate: character and personality in their purest state.
